“They are very good at taking civilians off the street that have never done something. They will mold them into a fine-tuned Hartmann machine. That’s what we intend to do.”According to Martinez, the Hartmann production facility is 350,000 square feet. The plant will be in operation 24/7, closing only for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. “We’ll be making approximately 200,000 egg cartons a day, running 12-hour shifts,” he noted.Informing the crowd with a military briefing-style of professional clarity and efficiency, Martinez took his audience through the steps of making what appears, on the surface, to be a rather utilitarian product. While maybe not as fragile as glass that shatters when broken, calcium shells holding protein fluid do break in transport and with handling, so a carton has to provide a cheap and lightweight form of cushioning protection. Hartmann’s first product, to be sold under the brandname “HartTop,” is a 2 X 6 micro-fiber white or gray-colored carton that is 100 percent recyclable.Waste paper that has been purchased through paper brokers is shredded, ground up and turned into a pulp slurry, poured and baked in carton molds in enormous ovens at 10 different temperatures in various stages that will cook-in hardness for stability and strength. The cartons are then printed with the necessary product information, inventoried and shipped to customers. Martinez added they will have the capacity to store 40 million cartons to buffer the time between production and shipping.Hartmann will be running one production line the first year. “It takes about 15 employees to run that one line,” says Martinez. As time and egg markets dictate, a second line could be installed and started up as early as a year or less. The goal is to be producing on four production lines within five years. They already have the land and resources to expand the plant when the time comes. There is also talk of expanding the product line in the future to include trays and containers, once a third line is added—a practice already in place at other Hartmann production plants. For right now, Jan. 23 is the target date for testing the equipment on the first production line. How much paper will the Hartmann plant use? Martinez says the Rolla Recycling Center produces about one semi-truck load of paper a month. “We will use one semi-truck load of paper a day per production line. I have to get my paper from large paper brokers. In Canada, where we have a large manufacturing plant with four lines—they average four to six truck loads a day.” Martinez says the paper for this plant will probably come from not only the Rolla Recycling Center, but also from sources in St. Louis or Columbia. The egg carton market is global, which is why Hartmann also has production plants in South America, Europe and the Middle East. Hartmann will be producing for the U.S. market and according to Martinez, the future looks bright. “Our plant in Canada ships 75 percent of their production to the U.S., so it only made sense to produce here. That facility produces 500 million cartons a year.”Martinez says the global market is one billion cartons. “There’s still a lot out there for us to grab.”
